Position Overview:

Thurmond Consulting is seeking a proactive, mission-driven Lead Consultant to join our Grant Administration Department. In this role, you will lead on client projects, ensuring high-quality results and timely execution for our nonprofit and public agency partners.


You’ll manage project work plans, coordinate deliverables, and facilitate communication between clients and internal teams, helping organizations access funding, design impactful programs, and implement sustainable solutions.


This position reports to the Program Manager and offers the opportunity to work across sectors such as housing, homelessness, behavioral health, and government grants.


Key Responsibilities:

Project Leadership

  • Serve as the primary lead on client projects, overseeing work plans, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Ensure timely execution and high-quality outcomes across all project phases.
  • Facilitate internal team meetings and client check-ins to maintain alignment and momentum.

Client Relationship Management

  • Act as the main point of contact for assigned clients, building strong, trust-based relationships. 
  • Communicate proactively about project progress, needs, and challenges. 
  • Offer strategic guidance rooted in client goals and contextual understanding.


Subject Matter Expertise 

  • Provide thought leadership and technical expertise in areas such as housing, behavioral health, homelessness, or federal/state grants. 
  • Conduct and present research, best practices, and analysis to inform client strategies. 
  • Represent the firm at external meetings, convenings, and presentations. 


Team Leadership & Support

  • Oversee and support the work of consultants, analysts, and coordinators on your projects. 
  • Review and approve deliverables for quality, accuracy, and client alignment. 
  • Mentor junior staff through coaching, feedback, and professional development support.


Strategic Planning & Problem Solving

  • Anticipate project risks, identify barriers, and develop actionable solutions. 
  • Lead or co-lead strategic planning sessions, stakeholder engagements, and community convenings. 
  • Translate complex information into clear, actionable insights. 


Internal Collaboration & Firm Development 

  • Contribute to firm-wide initiatives such as knowledge-sharing, systems improvement, and practice area development. 
  • Collaborate with leadership on project pipeline and capacity planning. 
  • Support business development by identifying new opportunities and contributing to proposal writing. 


Grant Research & Development

  • Identify relevant funding sources, including foundations, government agencies, and corporate partners. 
  • Research grant eligibility and requirements, and lead the development of compelling proposals. 
  • Write and edit grant applications, including narratives, budgets, and supporting documents. 


Communication & Reporting

  • Maintain proactive communication with managers to ensure alignment and transparency. 
  • Provide regular updates on project progress, risks, and milestones. 
  • Coordinate project staff effectively, ensuring expectations and quality standards are met. 
  • Document key decisions and communicate in a solution-oriented, professional manner. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (English, Communications, Business, or related field). OR 4+ years of hands-on experience in research, writing, and project management.


  • 2+ years of experience with federal or California State funding programs.


  • 2+ years of experience working with non-profits or local government agencies. ● Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail.


  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive) and Asana or similar CRM/project tools. ● Self-starter who thrives in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment.


  • Ability to travel as needed for client meetings or site visits.

Work Environment:

  • This is a remote position, though occasional travel or in-person meetings may be required. 
  • Candidates must have a reliable laptop, a stable internet connection, and a dedicated workspace.
