Lead Consultant (Behavioral Health)

Full-time position: $70,000 – $98,000 (DOE)

Location: Sacramento, CA | Remote, Travel 20%

Position Overview:

Thurmond Consulting is seeking a proactive, mission-driven Lead Consultant-Behavioral Health to join our Project & Programs team. In this role, you will serve as the primary lead on client projects, delivering high-quality, timely, and actionable results for nonprofit and public agency partners.


You will manage complex behavioral health initiatives, guide clients through structured problem-solving processes, and support implementation of best practices related to CalAIM, Enhanced Care Management, and Community Supports. This role requires strong project leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to meet clients where they are while advancing sustainable solutions.


This position reports to the Behavioral Health Team Manager and offers the opportunity to work across behavioral health, housing, homelessness, and government systems.


Key Responsibilities:

Project Leadership

  • Serve as the primary lead on assigned client projects, overseeing work plans, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Ensure high-quality execution and timely completion across all project phases.
  • Use project management tools (e.g., Asana) to track progress and maintain accurate status updates.
  • Facilitate internal team meetings and regular client check-ins to maintain alignment and momentum.
  • Identify risks, gaps, and opportunities and proactively recommend solutions.

Client Relationship Management

  • Act as the main point of contact for assigned clients, building strong, trust-based relationships.
  • Communicate proactively regarding project progress, needs, and challenges.
  • Provide strategic and technical guidance aligned with client goals, capacity, and context.


Subject Matter Expertise 

  • Apply advanced knowledge of behavioral health systems, including CalAIM and related initiatives. 
  • Conduct and present research, analysis, and best practices to inform client strategies. 
  • Represent the firm at external meetings, convenings, and presentations. 
  • Stay current on evolving behavioral health policies and assess implications for client work.  


Operational & Fiscal Support

  • Support clients in reviewing staffing models, workflows, systems, and financial considerations. 
  • Assess funding structures, reimbursement models, and compliance requirements. 
  • Identify operational or financial risks and clearly communicate tradeoffs and recommendations. 


Team Leadership & Support

  • Support and oversee consultants, analysts, and coordinators on assigned projects. 
  • Review and approve deliverables to ensure accuracy, quality, and client alignment. 
  • Provide coaching and professional development support to junior staff. 


Strategic Planning & Problem Solving

  • Anticipate project risks and barriers and develop actionable solutions. 
  • Lead or co-lead strategic planning sessions, stakeholder engagements, and community convenings. 
  • Translate complex information into clear, actionable insights.  


Internal Collaboration & Firm Development 

  • Contribute to firm-wide initiatives, including knowledge-sharing and systems improvement. 
  • Collaborate with leadership on project pipeline and capacity planning. 
  • Support business development efforts by identifying opportunities or contributing to proposals.  


Grant Research & Development

  • Identify potential funding sources, including foundations and government agencies. 
  • Research grant guidelines and eligibility requirements. 
  • Support the development of grant proposals, including narratives and budgets.  


Communication & Reporting

  • Maintain proactive communication with management to ensure alignment and transparency. 
  • Provide regular written and verbal updates on project milestones, risks, and timelines. 
  • Document key decisions and communicate in a professional, solution-oriented manner. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, English, Communications, Business, or a related field OR 4+ years of relevant professional experience. 
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in project management, research, analysis, and professional writing. 
  • Experience working in nonprofit and/or government environments. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent attention to detail. 
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace; familiarity with Asana or similar project management tools preferred. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven, collaborative environment. 
  • Ability to travel as needed for client meetings or site visits. 



Work Environment:

  • This is a remote position, though travel or in-person meetings may be required. 
  • Candidates must have a reliable laptop, a stable internet connection, and a dedicated workspace.
